Power transformers are crucial stationary electrical devices used in power systems to step up or step down alternating current voltage and current. Their core function is to facilitate the efficient transmission, distribution, and safe utilization of electrical energy through the principle of electromagnetic induction.
Electric power transformers operate based on the principle of electromagnetic induction and consist of two or more windings wound around the same iron core. When an alternating current is applied to the primary winding, the resulting AC generates a varying magnetic flux within the iron core. This magnetic flux simultaneously links with the secondary winding, inducing electromotive forces of the same frequency in both windings. Since the number of turns in each winding differs, the magnitude of the induced EMF is directly proportional to the number of turns, enabling voltage transformation. For instance, if the primary winding has N₁ turns and the secondary winding has N₂ turns, the voltage ratio U₁/U₂ is approximately equal to N₁/N₂.
